Profound Question #2
“What Should I Invest My Time and Energy In?”
My last email probably got you thinking about all sorts of goals you could focus on, and you might be wondering to yourself “What should I invest my time and energy in?”.
Whatever it is, you need to feel like pursuing it, otherwise you’ll be forced to rely solely on willpower, and that’s always a struggle!
The problem is, you won’t really feel like doing everything that makes some sense to do - but that can be a good thing.
Let me explain…
There are some things you want to do, and some things you need to do.
And the things that you need to do and feel like doing, would be amongst your best goals to set yourself.
Today I highly recommend you getting clear about your options, and figure out how you feel about each of them.
What do you feel like doing with your life?
What motivates you?
What drives you to exert yourself?
Be honest with yourself, this isn’t an opportunity to virtue signal to yourself, or pretend you care deeply about something that others care about.
Just because it could be socially strategic of you to show off how clever, ethical or moral you are, it doesn’t make it the best goal to organize your life around.
There are all kinds of things that we know intellectually would be a good idea for us - exercising for example.
The issue is, information doesn’t motivate anyone. How the information makes us feel on the other hand, is vital.
Because motion comes from emotion - we spend our whole lives doing what we feel like doing, even if it often makes no sense.
Our motivation to achieve something changes with the stages and phases of life we go through.
What motivated you as a child isn’t likely to be the same motivation that you’ll experience as a pensioner.
You must actually feel real, authentic desire, not just convince yourself that something you “should” find desirable is desirable.
“Should” is a real “parenty” word.
Your inner child isn’t that interested in what your parents think or thought you should do.
And let’s face it, your parents won’t have to suffer whatever fate is in store for you.
So living the life that someone else suggests, expects or demands of you, is NOT going to make you happy.
You MUST be the one who decides what’s best for you.
Look out for my next email, as I’ll be going deeper down the childhood dreams vs parental realities rabbit hole with you.
